Guarding Nature: Police in SW China dedicated to protecting migratory birds

China's commitment to modernization emphasizes coexistence between humans and nature. In southwest China's Yunnan Province, officers at a small police station have been dedicated to protecting migratory birds flying over the Ailao Mountains over the past 40 years. Yang Jinghao has the story.

These police officers are patrolling around the Ailao Mountains looking for any signs of bird hunting…

They're from a small police station in a nearby town in Nanhua County, in southwest China's Yunnan Province.

YANG JINGHAO  Nanhua County, Yunnan Province "The Ailao Mountains boast rich biodiversity. It's also an important migratory route for birds. Every September, local police officers also 'migrate' here, so to speak, to protect these creatures."

Many residents of the region used to live in extreme poverty and chose to hunt birds for food, or as a source of income.

Li Qiangao joined the protection effort in 1999, 15 years after it was launched.

LI QIANGAO Police Officer, Nanhua County "We even didn't have a tent to rest and could only use rain capes made of palm barks instead. Since they are damp-proof, we used them as both a kind of rain gear and something we could sit on when we were tired."

For them, the real challenge was the unknown dangers, such as falling from the cliffs.

LI QIANGAO Police Officer, Nanhua County "Walking in the dense forests, we would also encounter beasts like boars and bears. Venomous snakes are also very common. Meanwhile, we need to beware of fallen deadwood, which could be fatal. I was once nearly hit by one."

Besides challenges from nature, they have to deal with confrontations with hunters.

YANG ZHENGQIANG Police Officer, Nanhua County "Once I was chasing a law breaker at night, I tried to hold him down on the ground. Then we tumbled down the mountain. We rolled downward together for about 40 to 50 meters before we stopped. Then he asked me to set him free, saying he would accept punishment."

It wasn't until 2010 that a shelter was built in the vicinity of the mountain.

Over the past four decades, apart from strict law enforcement, the police have educated the residents to become bird guardians not hunters.

HE CHENGFU Villager, Nanhua County "People's awareness has been changed, and everyone knows they can't hurt the birds anymore and gets down to action to protect them."

It's working. In recent years, the police have handled few wildlife-related cases, and the number of wild animals has also been growing, but they remain on high alert, ready to carry on the mission to protect nature.
